Your favorite experience?

I figured with the show closing in FIVE =( days that this would be a fun (and maybe even emotional for some people) thread. What was your all time FAVORITE Hairspray experience? It could be with any production of Hairspray (preferably not the movie, unless that's all you have seen and you would like to share your movie experience). But what performance REALLY made you not want to stop the beat? (For those of you who have seen it numerous times, it might be hard, but try to think of ONE performance that just blow you away)

Mine was on March 22, 2008. Matinee.
This was my 4th time seeing Hairspray on Broadway. I won lotto, seats 2 and 4. This was my number one Hairspray experience. The understudy board was possibly the greatest board I could have ever read.
1. Van Hughes as Link
2. Leslie McDonel as F.A.F
3. Susie Mosher as Velma
4. Kasey Marino as Corny
5. Jacqui Polk as Brenda (no slip for her..)

Wow. Leslie was over the top HYSERICAL. and I remember how much I LOVED Van's Link. Leslie just totally made the show for me. That's the day she came out wearing a hairy mole. Niki as Penny, SHANNON as Tracy, Darlene as Motormouth, Ash Spenc as Amber. Those were the good ole' days! lol. I miss that cast. But anywho...it was just an incredible performance, with my favorite cast to this day, they are still my favorites. Well..with the exception of Van as Link, becuase now, Connie owns my heart, haha! I perferred Susie as Velma to now Karen Mason. I enjoy Clarke as Corny, but having Kasey then was great. I remember during YCSTB, I was right below Niki when she was dancing and she looked down at me and gave me a HUGE smile. That was probably one of the greatest moments of that show for me. I still to this day remmeber the exact song note that she looked at me and smiled. I remember the exact position she was in while dancing. It's a nice memory. (yeah, im a nerd..but..) haha! So..share..yuour favorite experience!

My favorite experience was August 15th, 2007.

No understudies except for Nicole Powell as a Dynamite. I have never seen a Hairspray cast so energetic. Everyone was at the top of their game. It was just perfection. Well, almost perfection. If only Kasey Marino was playing Corny instead of Lance Bass. But other than him, it was perfect. Darlene Love sang the most powerful 'I Know Where I've Been' I've ever heard and she gave me goose bumps. I really miss that cast! Not to mention Marc Shaiman was conducting and wearing a blonde bee-hive wig. At the end of the performance Shannon said something along the lines of "Today is a very special day because we're celebrating Hairspray's fifth year on Broadway" and the audience went wild.

So... That's my favorite Hairspray experience. When I was thinking about it I started getting teary-eyed haha. yep I'm a nerd...

Yes.. when you have seen the show &$@ times, it is impoossible to pick one performance.. inividual moments and people, yes. Show, almost impossible.

It will probably be this Sunday.. The closing performances of any show are absolutelyy insane. I still vividly recall the first clsoing I ever went to (All Shook Up) and can still get emotional about it.

I KNOW I will be a mess outside the theatre, and it will only grow when I am given the special edition Playbill and thumb through the special features (which I will try to type out and add here), and multiply endlessly every moment of the show.

Re: Your favorite experience?

Well, I've only seen Hairspray once and that was in July of 2007. After hearing all the hype and how awesome the musical was, my aunt bought my twin brother and I the Original Broadway Cast Recording. We were amazed by all the catchy songs and how funny it was. That summer, a week before vacationing to NYC, we recieved an email explaining special discount tickets for the Fourth of July. We ended up seeing it that day and fell in love with it.

With Shannon Durig, Alexa Vega, Paul Vogt, and Ashley Parker Angel we had the most memorable and exciting theater experience to date. I can remember everything, and how kind the cast was at the stage door.

I'll be seeing the show this February on tour and hope to relive the magic all over again.

So, thank you Hairspray for all the fun times, memories, and people (all of you) that I've met because of it.

Re: Your favorite experience?

I would say the best was the first time I saw it in Nov 2006. I flew to NYC to see Diana DeGarmo in it and had little idea what the show was about. I was in the first row, and holy crap. The show basically stood for everything I believed in. I'm practically a living Tracy haha. I saw it 2 more times and was hooked.

The next best experience was last month when I was able to get some time and money to see it a couple more times. I was an emotional wreck. I cried tears of joy during good morning baltimore because I couldn't believe I had finally made it back to the show, and then tears of sadness because it was my last time to ever see it. The shows themselves were amazing because I was singled out by the cast on 2 separate occasions. First, Susie chose me as her person to mess with during Big Dollhouse, and before YCSTB Marissa Perry broke character and shouted "Oh Hey!!" to me before she ran on the stage. After the show she was like, "I can't believe I did that!"

After the show I was lucky enough to be offered a backstage tour. The cast recognized me from all my Hairspray art haha. It was absolutely surreal.

Apart from the show itself, Hairspray has opened a lot of other doors for me. Such as meeting a lot of cool people, meeting the tour cast, and of course going to the premiere of the movie. If not for my initial obsession with the broadway show, that whole experience never would've happened.

My favorite "Hairspray" experience has to be the last time I saw the show on Broadway: December 30, 2008 - the first performance of the final week.

The entire final cast was present except for Daniel Robinson, who was doing the "Happy Days" tour.

The entire performance was unbelievable! Every single one of the actors was at the top of their game! Harvey had to be the highlight of this performance. I love his Edna! You can truly tell that he truly cares for the character, while at the same time, he makes her absolutely hysterical!

Also, the stage door was the most crowded I have ever seen it, and lots of the actors came out.

It was a great evening! emoticon
