RENT IS CLOSING!!

i just got an email stating that rent's final performance is June 1st.
this the article from the email.

Producers Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum and Allan S. Gordon have announced that the landmark Broadway musical RENT will close at the Nederlander Theatre after the evening performance on Sunday, June 1, 2008, after playing 5,012 performances and 16 previews. RENT is the seventh longest-running show in Broadway history.

RENT, written by Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, opened at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996 following a history-making, sold out, extended limited engagement at off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop.

RENT's young creator, Jonathan Larson, never got to see his show's success, having died of an aortic aneurysm early morning on January 25, 1996 after the show's final dress rehearsal the previous evening.
RENT is the winner of 18 major awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 4 Tony Awards®, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, 6 Drama Desk Awards, 3 Obie Awards and a Drama League Award.

RENT launched the careers of an incredible group of young performers, including Taye Diggs, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, and Daphne Rubin-Vega.

Stars from the world of pop music joined the RENT cast at various times throughout its run, including Joey Fatone of 'N Sync, Drew Lachey of 98 Degrees, Melanie Brown of the Spice Girls, and Frenchie Davis and Tamyra Gray of "American Idol."

None of this would have been possible without you -- the dedicated fans of RENT. For the past 12 years, you have waited outside the stage door, mooed with us, shared your stories, cried for Angel, and cheered for us. Now, we want to say thank you. See RENT one last time before the lights at the Nederlander are dimmed.

its soo sad!! but it will probley be back in a few years!!
Rent is very special to me, and i hope it is to you too. ive had so many good memories about that show. its horrible to see it leave, but i hope everyone can catch it before it leaves us.

while im very sad to see Rent go, I kind of wish they had closed it right after Anthony and Adam left, atleast it would have closed on a high note. I hear its been playing to 30% capacity these days. Then again, posting a closing notice is a sure fire way to boost ticket sales so they may extend it a few months after this date just to accomodate for the demand in tickets.

This is so depressing. Especially the website. "the end of an era" that about sums it up!

i wouldnt be surprised if they exteneded, a closing notice right before the summer which is broadway's high season doesnt make a whole lot of sense and many shows that have posted such early advance closing notices were counting on everyone wanting to see it one last time to raise ticket sales.

oh i forgot to add that the guy also said that they made over 1million in that half hour so they might extend the show for a little bit longer.

well, youre sorta missing the point there... Shrek is not a Disney property and other people look at the success of child driven musicals, even Wicked, and think they want to give it a try as well. It only makes sense that Dreamworks would jump in the mix. Besides, NYC is a family vacation spot, where people expect to be able to do things with their children, not leave them in a hotel while they have their night out and it is largely a tourist driven business.
