March of Dimes, this sunday in NYC
The March of Dimes' mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Through research, community services, and education the March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: premature birth, birth defects, and low birth weight.
Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death in the first month of life, it affects half a million babies a year in the United States and those who survive may have lifelong health problems. And premature births are on the rise -- up to 30% since 1981 and in nearly half the cases, the causes are unknown.
That is why I am asking you to support the March of Dimes WalkAmerica. The March of Dimes is leading the way to find answers by supporting research into the causes of premature birth, birth defects and low birth weight. I am joining the fight because I was born with one of those birth defects that the March of Dimes is fighting. At four hours old I was flown to another hospital so that specialized doctors could perform an emergency six hour surgery on my spine. Today doctors are able to detect Spina Bifida early on in a pregnancy and in some cases repair the spinal damage while the fetus is still developing. Such strides in a short 26 year period would not have been possible without the support of organizations like the March of Dimes.
WalkAmerica is a 10K walk around Manhattan on Sunday, April 27th that begins and ends at 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. Sign in begins at 8am and the walk begins at 9am .
You can help by becoming a walker, or sponsoring an individual walker. Take a look at these financial stats provided by WalkAmerica:
· $100 could provide 10 families of babies in newborn intensive care with information and support to ease their fears and uncertainty.
· $330 could provide nurses with online continuing education about low birth weight, birth defects and preterm labor.
· $500 could fund a program to help pregnant woman quit smoking.
· $900 could provide 15,000 pregnant women with wallet cards listing symptoms common in preterm birth and what to do if you have them.
This year, Im a little late in signing up and so I've set my personal goal at $500 but I would be thrilled to get half that. I hope you visit my online sponsor page ( http://www.marchforbabies.org/spouzic ) and support me in this great cause, or join me at the walk! Do ask your parents before donating any money to the cause, I dont want any of you getting in trouble!!
Best, Christina

This is a great organization! It's very sweet of you to help out.
Sadly, the well is quite dry. I'm sorry. Best of luck though!
